Our History

Our congregation was organized in 1914 worshiping in a brick building on East South and Allyn Streets in Akron.  Ten years later, in 1924, they joined an evangelical denomination based in eastern Pennsylvania.   The church was reorganized as First Evangelical Congregational Church.  The church was relocated to East South and Spicer Streets for the next 5 years.  In 1928, a new brick building was constructed at East South  and Coventry Streets and was the home of First Church for the next 25 years.  In 1954, First Church moved to the auditorium of the Akron City Water Works Building at Johnston and Spicer Streets after the church property was bought by the city of Akron to provide for the new Akron Central Interchange.

At the same time, a lot was purchased on East Woodsdale Avenue in Firestone Park and construction began on a new building.  On March 13, 1955, the cornerstone was laid in the new building and the first service was held at the new church on July 3rd.  In 1962, the Christian Education wing of the church was built to house Sunday school rooms and offices.   In May, 2014, we celebrated our 100th Anniversary as a church with a special service of former pastors, baptisms and a luncheon celebrating what the Lord has done.  Even though things may look different, one thing remains the same: the Word of God is preached and taught each time these doors are open and lives continue to be changed to the Glory of God the Father.
